BACKGROUND
Providence, RI - In early February 2012, the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded the state of Rhode Island $12 million in funding to help make large-scale improvements to their communities’ public housing developments. The funds are to encourage the state to focus its efforts on public housing areas in desperate need of repair, renovation, or modernization, in order to help create better, more sustainable living conditions for the residents of RI.
The Wiggins Village Apartments, a RI property that accommodates 16 two to three story residential buildings (containing 285 living units), a maintenance building, and a retail store has been assessed as needing remedial services. The property has been discerned as having impacted soil, contaminated with above the Residential Direct Exposure Criteria (RIDEM) and above the Industrial/Commercial Direct Exposure Criteria. Remedial construction has since been awarded to RED Technologies, LLC and the project is scheduled to start this spring and to be completed this summer.
